Richard Torrez Defeats Joey Dawejko by Disqualification
Richard Torrez, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the super heavyweight division, defeated Joey Dawejko by disqualification in the main event of a Top Rank Boxing card on ESPN+ on Friday night at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Torrez was awarded the victory after Dawejko was disqualified for repeated low blows in the third round.
Torrez started the fight well, using his jab to keep Dawejko at bay and landing some hard right hands. Dawejko, a veteran of 20 fights, was game and tried to brawl with Torrez, but he was outmatched in terms of speed and power. In the third round, Dawejko landed a low blow that dropped Torrez to the canvas. Torrez was able to get up and continue fighting, but Dawejko landed another low blow moments later. The referee had no choice but to disqualify Dawejko.
Emiliano Vargas Remains Unbeaten
In the co-main event, Emiliano Vargas remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision victory over Abraham Nova in a 10-round super lightweight bout. Vargas, a 23-year-old from Venezuela, is now 19-0 with 12 knockouts. Nova, a 34-year-old from Mexico, is now 21-1.
Vargas started the fight well, using his jab to control the distance and landing some hard right hands. Nova was game and tried to brawl with Vargas, but he was outmatched in terms of speed and power. Vargas dropped Nova in the third round with a left hook, but Nova was able to get up and continue fighting.
Vargas continued to control the fight in the later rounds, landing the cleaner and harder punches. Nova never stopped trying, but he was unable to mount a serious challenge. In the end, Vargas won by unanimous decision with scores of 98-91, 97-92, and 96-93.
