No 13 Wake Forest Makes History Knocks Off No 1 Stanford 1 0

## No. 13 Wake Forest Makes History, Knocking Off No. 1 Stanford, 1-0 ### The Upset of the Season Wake Forest pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the college soccer season, defeating No. 1 Stanford, 1-0, on Thursday night in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Demon Deacons, ranked No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, got their game-winning goal from junior forward Ema Twumasi, who scored in the 70th minute. Stanford had not lost a game since November 14, 2021, a streak of 23 games. ### A Historic Win Wake Forest's victory is the first time the Demon Deacons have defeated a No. 1 team since 2007. The win is also the first time a non-Power Five team has defeated the No. 1 team in the country since 2019. ### Twumasi's Heroics Twumasi's goal was her sixth of the season and her third game-winning goal. She is now tied for the team lead in goals with sophomore forward Sophie Shattuck. Twumasi's goal was set up by a great pass from junior midfielder Giovanna DeMarco. ### Stanford's Frustration Stanford had a number of chances to score in the game, but could not find the back of the net. The Cardinal had 15 shots in the game, but only four of them were on goal. Wake Forest goalkeeper Talia Tabb made four saves to earn the shutout. ### What's Next? Wake Forest will now host No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday, September 11th. Stanford will look to bounce back when they host No. 15 Pepperdine on Sunday, September 11th. The Cardinal will then open Pac-12 play on the road against California on Thursday, September 15th.
